In this essay, the authors present an approach to building Management students’ capacities at the intersection of leadership and diversity. They argue that effective leadership in the context of diversity begins with understanding the self rather than understanding the other. The Mind Yourself Practice (MY Practice) highlights four important aspects of our cognition: unconscious or automatic thought processes, emotions, the influence of social identities, and the desire for certainty. The authors report on specific experiences with MY Practice in their teaching about leadership and diversity. Finally, the authors see the potential for MY Practice to be used in courses in a variety of disciplines beyond business.
